The story is narrated by a self-aware security android, or "SecUnit," that has hacked its own governor module and refers to itself as "Murderbot". The plot follows Murderbot as it investigates a neighboring mission's disappearance while trying to protect a group of scientists and grapple with its own identity and desire for independence
