Catnip is a strong-smelling herb. It is native to Central Europe, though it can now be found in most of Canada and the Northeast United States.

Catnip provides therapeutic and behavioral benefits for cats, medicinal advantages for humans, and natural pest protection in gardens. While famously known for driving felines wild, its active compound, nepetalactone, acts as a stimulant when smelled by cats but serves as a gentle sedative for humans and a repellent against insects.

It belongs to the mint family and has oval-toothed, dark green leaves and white flowering tops. Catnip leaves and flowers are consumed as a herbal tea for many health benefits.

Better sleep quality: The chemical structure of nepetalactone mirrors the calming compounds found in valerian root, aiding those with insomnia.

Anxiety relief: Drinking the tea relaxes the nervous system, reducing restlessness and everyday tension.

Digestive support: Acting as a carminative, it relaxes smooth stomach muscles to alleviate gas, bloating, and intestinal cramps.

Symptom management: Its traditional properties promote sweating to help break mild fevers and soothe respiratory coughs.

Catnip tea is slightly bitter and has a minty, earthy taste. Some people prefer adding lemon, honey, or sugar to improve the flavor.
